Advancing Comprehensive School Safety in Asia Pacific (APCSS)

Purpose:

This policy briefing, jointly released by Asia Pacific Coalition for School Safety (APCSS) and its partners, in advance of the Asia Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR), 2-5 November 2016, in India, shows that education rights of school children to access to quality education are being disrupted because of natural and man-made disasters.

It calls for countries and their humanitarian and development partners to urgently ensure children’s rights to safety and security in schools, and to educational continuity in the face of emergencies are included in the Asia Regional Implementation Plans, AMCDRR declaration, national education and disaster management plans and policies, and collect better data to monitor the progress.

Asia Pacific Coalition for School Safety (APCSS) Strategic Paper 2016-2018

The Asia Pacific Coalition for School Safety (APCSS) was established on 19th Sep 2012. The shared framework for understanding and acting to bring about Comprehensive School Safety, including the “3 pillars”; 1. Safe Learning Facilities, 2. School Disaster Management and 3. Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Education) founded on multi-hazard and child-centered risk assessment, education sector analysis, and alignment of education and disaster managment sector policies ands plans. The members of APCSS are Plan International, Save the Children, World Vision, UNICEF, UNESCO, IFRC, ADPC and UNISDR

Purpose and overview:

The strategy paper outlines Asia Pacific Coalition for School Safety (APCSS) for 2016 to 2018. It sets out APCSS’:

APCSS Statement at 2nd ASEAN Conference on School Safety

Overview:
Asia-Pacific Coalition for School Safety (APCSS) calls for the engagement of more partners to join ASEAN Safe School Initiative (ASSI) in South-East Asia to accelerate and upscale the initiative and make it as effective as possible. It hopes that coordination at national and regional levels will be enhanced and collaborative efforts of interested stakeholders in Asia-Pacific region will increase the number of countries that adopt and implement approaches consistent with Comprehensive School Safety Framework (CSSF). APCSS calls on governments to sign up as a Safe School Leader as part of Worldwide Initiative for Safe Schools (WISS) for a stronger and more resilient Asia-Pacific.
