The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign that started in 1991 and originates from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute. Participants chose the 16 days between 25 November (International Day Against Violence Against Women) and 10 December (International Human Rights Day) in order to emphasise that gender-based violence and violence against women is a violation of human rights

The IFRC is taking part in the global campaign to raise awareness on this critical issue. The campaign highlights that anyone can be a victim of such violence but some people are at relatively higher risk due, for example, to their age, disability, separation from their family, displacement, ethnicity or by being a migrant. Disasters can exacerbate pre-existing gender inequalities and discrimination often resulting in increased incidence of gender-based violence during and in the aftermath of disasters.
